pulling my hair out or whats left of it.

i have a customised droidsticks box which i use here in portugal but would love to get my VPN working with it so i could use iplayer etc rather than filmon which is very jumpy.

i have an account with privateinternetaccess.com and it works great on my mac and my ipad, but whenever i try to get it to work on my androidbox it says its connecting, then it says not connected.

now droidsticks reccommend (like this site too) privateinternetaccess an privateinternetaccess say on their site that they are android compatible but neither was able to help me to get it to work. PIA just gave me a long list of fairly random changes to the settings, and droidsticks just kept repeating basic information that was nothing to do with my questions.

i dont really want to change VPN as its a good service and price, and i did previously try a free trial of astrill and it again didnt work on the android box.

ill even happyily (ish) buy a newer box if its a problem with that model and a newer one would be guaranteed to work.

you could try the open vpn client from the play store and add the config files from PIA

Code:
https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/openvpn/openvpn.zip
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.openvpn.openvpn&hl=en_GB
i havent tried this myself i just know its possible.

right i think this might mean my box aint capable.

i downloaded the hotspot shield VPN app. now this is free and therefore doesnt have any login stuff or options. i know its not going to be as good long term as a paid VPN but in terms of getting it to work it should be the easiest. just says connecting for a minute then not connected.

so is another box definitely going to fix it

i think if you get an android box they are capable of having a VPN installed.. or go for the raspberry pi 2 model B which you can install openelec and then there is a good adoon by metalkettle for VPN ise with PIA that work excellently with the pi2.. it must be pi2 though as its latest on sale and a bargain ..

To Your Left
There is no such thing as an android device that ISNT COMPATIBLE with VPN.

It is strange however that it seems to not be taking. What was the process you experienced with PIA? I have set this up on countless devices and have experienced issues with some....

Also; for what it's worth...no need to hop on Twitter ;) our forum is designed to help you right here. [emoji12]

Sorry to necro a thread, but figured this info might be worthwhile. PIA is a pita to setup sometimes, lol.

I finally got it working on my Tianle TL869 (from what I've read on some forums, it's also got the RK3188 chipset), not sure exactly how though, but hope this helps:

Before I begin, just the usual - this can possibly brick your device. You take full accountability for any consequences that might come of you following or sharing the following advice.

1. Your device has to be rooted.
This app might root it - "http://soft.mgyun.com/files/products/romastersu/1000/2014/46/RomasterSu_2.0.7_141129_1000.apk". Don't remember how to use the app. I think it just rooted on start, or you might have to click a button. I think it's in Chinese.

2. Install "tun.ko installer" - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aed.tun.installer&hl=en .
Run it, and click Install.
If it says "Tun module is installed", you're good. If not, try unchecking the Build Number and clicking install again. If that doesn't work, I have no idea what else to try.

3. If the tun.ko file is on your SD card, copy it to "/system/lib/modules", and afterwards make sure you set file's permissions (chmod) to the same permissions as the other files in the folder. If there's already a tun.ko file in that system folder, I'm assuming that's not your issue, so don't overwrite the already-there-file.

4. You might need to install a binary using "OpenVPN Installer"-"https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.schaeuffelhut.android.openvpn.installer" & install Busybox (my preferred app is "https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.busybox.installer&hl=en") - I honestly don't remember if that was necessary.

5. Restart your android stick by unplugging/replugging it.

6. Install & open "OpenVPN for Android"-"https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.blinkt.openvpn&hl=en".

7. Follow this guide - "https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/forum/discussion/108/openvpn-configuration-on-android-instead-of-pptp-ipsec".

8. [Hopefully] enjoy your working VPN!

Note: Step 3 isn't necessary... but until I did it, I had to re-run the tun.ko installer & install the module on every device reboot. Now it persists.
