ATV520 - Bricked?

Hi all,

What a great community! I have been lurking for a while, picking up bits and pieces. I bought a MyGica ATV520 and it was brilliant. It was running fine for a couple of days and I saw there was a new firmware available I downloaded it and put it on an SD card. I waited for the upgrade to complete (which it did) and then rebooted. It's never come back!

I just have one red LED on (the middle one), no output to the TV. I have emailed MyGica and they have given me serveral firmwares to try, but I don't think it is even picking up the SD card, let alone the image. As soon as I apply power to the box the middle LED comes on and nothing happens.

Has anyone got any tips? Is it bricked (I fear it might be)? Is there any internal surgery to be tried?

Thanks for any advice / help etc

Michael

You should be able to factory reset it via recovery.

There should be a small button somewhere on the device (most likely the underneath of the unit) that allows you to hold it down whilst you power it on.

Once you are in recovery like any other android device you should be able to factory reset then apply the update images on the usb stick.

Good luck.

Hi Darcy

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I have never managed to get an output to a TV since the "update". I have tried various different firmwares and combinations of holding the "upgrade" button on the bottom of the unit to no avail. :(

I am happy to open the unit up if there is any form of serial interface that I could perhaps use?

How long have you had the device? I would try and send it back if it's not doing anything.

If it's an OTA update that's caused the fault it's outwith your control.

I wouldn't be opening anything until you've been told they won't replace it.

Just to let you know I have fixed this. You need to use the serial cable...

You need to download and extract the following
http://www.sendspace.com/file/kr3wta
Run the sdflashcard.exe with administrator permissions, in the drop down select you SD card, tick the box and hit the button, format the card, then hit the ok button twice!
Download and extract this to the sd card
http://www.sendspace.com/file/qdkl2y
Follow the readme
Put the SD card in and power on the ATV...
This should then boot android, once it has done this. Power off the ATV. Hold down the upgrade button and power up, hold the upgrade button for 5 seconds then release. It will now install android to the ATV. This is all output via serial and HDMI.

thanks for the info, funnily enough I tried using the rs232 cable and it would not connect, previously I had tried all various usb/sd cards with different images and no joy. About 20 minutes after I tried with the cable I received a second image to try from geniatech support and to by shock it actually booted. I would suggest anyone in same situation persist with geniatech support.

Just registered to tell michaelsage that his instructions worked perfectly.

I ran Windows XP through VirtualBox on my Ubuntu host and hooked it up with my serial cable that I eBay'ed last week.
Running PuTTY through VirtualBox was no problem.

Thanks!

The serial cable needed a bit of bodging because the pin-outs on the ATV520 were a little to close together.

Left the 5Volt+ off. Success!
