I have just installed Openelec 5.0.3 and Kodi 14.1 onto my mx2. These are the latest versions that I could find specifically for the mx2 but would like to install a later version of openelec and kodi 14.2. On the openelec website there is no "version" for the mx2. Can I install the i386 Linux version? I don't want to brick my device and thought I would ask before I tried it. Since openelec does not have any apps, I assume that I install the kodi update by running the install under ssh. Would that work?

Thanks in advance for any help

No, you can't install the i386 version: you can only install versions that were specifically build for the MX2. At the moment you will need to wait on Codesnake building a newer version or using a version that was built from his github by someone else. There appears to be a beta version of OpenELEC 6.0 (Kodi 15 RC) here https://forums.matricom.net/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=11823&start=2580

Another option is EmbER which is Linux based, and very similar to OpenELEC http://ember-dev.com/downloads/
