For a while we’ve been saying that self-censorship poses a significant threat to not only the Kodi community, but to the internet as a whole. Developers are being scared into deleting legitimate code out of fear of being persecuted. Copyright bullies are scaring developers of legitimate Kodi addons into deleting their repositories and quitting development entirely. Developers are not paid, and like most regular people do not have the money to fight a lengthy lawsuit against billion dollar corporations. Since they have nothing to gain from development, winning in court still means losing. We have divised a simple way anyone to fight back against the wicked arm of code censorship!
As it turns out, GitHub forks remain active even once a repository is deleted. For this reason, we are asking all who are willing and able, to step up and create a GitHub account for the purpose of code preservation. No technical knowledge is required, even your grandmother could do it. The whole process will take less than two minutes, and will allow the code behind your favourite Kodi addons to live on, far into the ages! And maybe, just maybe, once copyright bullies see that there are too many forks to bully, they will finally back down for good. We’ll walk you through the whole thing in the guide below, and really appreciate your contribution.
Step 1: Navigate to the GitHub web site using your computer’s web browser.
Step 2: Fill out the signup form on their home page, then press the Sign up for GitHub button.
Step 3: Press the Continue button immediately, leaving the first set of options as default.
Step 4: Fill out the survey and press Submit, or you may press skip this step.
Step 5: Check your email and complete the necessary email verification before you’ll be able to fork anything.
Step 6: Input tvaddonsco (or any other GitHub developer username) into the search bar and press the enter button on your keyboard.
Step 7: Click on the Users tab on the vertical menu bar.
Step 8: Click on the tvaddonsco user (or whichever other) from the search listing.
Step 9: Click on the first repository you wish to fork. In this case we’re using tva-release-repo as an example.
If you click on the Repositories tab at the top you might find additional repositories which haven’t been displayed as shortcuts on the Overview tab.
Step 10: Click on the Fork button at the top right corner of the GitHub repository interface.
Step 11: Wait a few seconds for the repository to fork to your account.
Step 12: You’re done! You should now see your favourite repository located within your own GitHub account, entirely independent from the original.
Please tell us which repositories you forked in the comments below so that users will know which ones they should fork too! Thank you for taking the time to support the open source community by forking Kodi addons and other cool projects for the purposes code preservation. If you really want to get funky, think about submitting a pull request to contribute code as the next step. It would be hugely appreciated everyone could share this article with their friends, family and coworkers so that we can all do our part.
