Debunking the Coexistence of Kodi and Unofficial Kodi Addons

It seems that there has been some confusion in the air as to the distinct separation between Team Kodi or the XBMC Foundation (not us), which develops the media player software itself, and our web site (this one), which principally provides unofficial third party add-ons compatible with the former. Basically, they develop the base software, and we provide a safe place for the development of unofficial add-ons that are more online streaming-centric in nature.

Kodi, formerly known as XBMC, is a media player software developed by the XBMC Foundation, a non-profit consortium of open source software developers. It has been in development since 2002, when it originated on the scene as the Xbox Media Player, and is primarily used for the organizing and playing of video and audio media files from local and network storage media.

It permits for the use of add-ons or plug-ins which can be used for a variety of purposes including subtitles, weather forecast reporting, and interfacing with online content. KDebunking the Coexistence of Kodi and Unofficial Kodi Addonsodi comes with their official add-on repository preinstalled; however due to the open source nature of the Kodi project, anyone can come along and create their own third party add-ons, without any approval from the XBMC Foundation being necessary.

Several years ago, the XBMC Foundation took some precautions in order to limit liability, and banned certain add-ons from being discussed or distributed at their web site. It was at that point in time that the foundation was laid for the creation of an unofficial community site for third party XBMC add-on developers called XBMC HUB, which eventually became TV ADDONS, the name we are known by today.

It is very important that the difference between us and them be recognized in order to respect the trademark of the Kodi project. We have a more relaxed addon policy, which is why many developers choose TV ADDONS over the official repo. It has also been made very clear that the official developers do not want their application name to be associated with unofficial plugins.

It is our goal to provide a welcoming atmosphere for users and developers alike, with very few development restrictions.

So next time you’re using your favourite addon, remember that the software you are running on your device comes from the Kodi camp, whereas the add-on you are using within Kodi, is unofficial and not in any way, shape, or form condoned by Team Kodi or the XBMC Foundaton.

In the future, please do your best to ensure that our work is not confused with the work of Team Kodi or the official XBMC Foundation; out of respect for the developers and in order to ensure the longevity of the project we have all grown to love so much, as the official Kodi developers cannot risk their trademark being mistakenly for unofficial means.
