ZemTV Developer Fundraising to Cover Defense in Dish Network Lawsuit

Earlier this week, the developer behind the ZemTV addon announced his intention to defend himself against claims being made by Dish Network in a lawsuit that also targets our community as a whole. Shani lives in England, but is being sued in Texas, a place he has never even visited.

He developed a Kodi addon which scraped content from online sources which were not in his control. From what we understand, Shani followed the DMCA and removed allegedly infringing content as soon as he received a takedown notice, yet he’s still being sued.

Dish Network is claiming that Shani retransmitted Pakistani channels for which they reserve the American distribution rights. The problem is, Shani did not run any servers and had nothing to do with distribution or hosting of content. Shani claims he was unaware that the content being scraped was infringing.

Whether or not Shani did something wrong should be up to the court to decide. However, he needs to fundraise in order to make it happen. Hiring lawyers across the Atlantic can certainly be quite costly. He hopes addon users will step forward so that he’ll have a fair chance at pleading his defense.

Shani claims his innocence and it would be unfortunate to see a family man lose by default because he couldn’t afford to defend himself half way across the world. Everyone should have the chance to actually defend themselves in court. Shani will appreciate anything you can afford to donate.
